Bethany Small's piece in The Vine, 20 June, provides an overview on ARIs from a Sydney perspective:
The kind of classic idea of an ARI is a gallery space that puts on a bunch of shows with fairly quick turnaround, often in group format and mainly by emerging artists (see MOP, firstdraft, The Papermill etc) but they can also be venues (Red Rattler, Dirty Shirlows), channels of communication (runway, Das Platforms), people who put on festivals and events in spaces not their own (Quarterbred, Imperial Panda [RIP]), providers of studio space (Bill + George, FraserStudios) or mix-and-match combinations of these. ARIs are non-commercial, with running costs usually covered by sponsorship and grants.
